Fancy the new Samsung Galaxy S20 series but out of your wallet reach? Don't fret as Samsung has announced a new successor to the Galaxy S10 Lite.

When Samsung launched the Galaxy S10 Lite at the beginning of 2020, people were astounded on how Samsung can give a flagship-grade smartphone at a lower price than its more premium counterparts. At $649, it cost $100 less than the entry-level S10e but you get a larger screen, a bigger 48MP main camera with Super Steady OIS, and Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset regardless of region. It didn't take long for people to get hooked with it and Samsung decided to keep the tradition alive with the S20 family.

Initially rumoured as the S20 Lite, it's officially called the S20 Fan Edition (FE). Just like the rest of the S20 range, there will be a choice of 4G and 5G options but instead of having Exynos 990 as the default chipset on both options, it will only make its way to the 4G variant. The 5G variant will have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset with an external 5G modem. Other than that, everything is identical between the two.

With a 6.5" 20:9 screen panel, it sits between the S20 and S20+. You still get a 120Hz screen refresh rate but the screen resolution is capped to 1080p+. It's the same story for internal storage and RAM capacity configuration as there won't be a 12GB RAM or 512GB internal storage option for the FE. Instead, you get either 6GB or 8GB RAM and 128GB or 256GB internal storage. If you need to have more storage, a microSD card expansion slot is available.

The camera department has undergone some slight modifications. The main camera still retains the same 12MP 1/1.76" 1.8µm sensor as in the S20 and S20+. While the ultrawide camera resolution stays the same at 12MP, it has a smaller sensor size and loses out the Super Steady feature. The most notable difference is the telephoto camera. Whereas the S20 and S20+ have a 64MP hybrid zoom sensor that can record 8K video, the FE only made do with an 8MP 3x zoom sensor. As for the front camera, it has a 32MP Quad Bayer sensor with autofocus.

As for the rest of the hardware, it has a 4,500 mAh battery capacity with a 25W wired fast charging rate and a 15W wireless fast charging rate. Just like the rest of the S20 range, the 3.5mm audio jack is not available. That said, you still get IP68 dust/water protection, Samsung Pay, and Samsung DeX support.

At the time of this writing, the S20 FE is now open for pre-order with the Malaysian market receiving the 5G variant with 256GB internal storage. It will be priced at MYR 3,399 with a choice of 24 months installment at RM 141.63 per month.
